First Takes is an exploration into the raw, unfiltered, pure connection that takes place between art and artist. All melodies are spur-of-the-moment piano improvisations that are being discovered as the recording is taking place. In each song you will hear everything that was part of that moment. Noises from outside my studio, the creaking of a piano bench, an errant note, and who knows what else. The nature of First Takes is rough and without polish, as is commonly the case with an artist’s experience of discovery.
When I first began playing the piano, my intention was to uncover melodies which I would then further develop into songs. As I continued to write more and more songs, I naturally began to group songs into albums based on themes. This is a rewarding and wonderful way to spend time at the piano, however, in recent years, I have increased my focus on melodic discovery that is rooted in consistent newness. First Takes is an ongoing collection, and each song is an attempt to be completely new and boundless. Most of what you hear is improvised and uncharted, yet at times beautiful discoveries naturally foster deeper exploration, and within the pursuit of newness, a familiar structure can quickly emerge out of an initial improvisation. However, there is no goal in any of these melodies. Like shooting stars, they are merely fleeting moments.
Thanks for listening. Enjoy.
